Selling is not a dirty word

When you say the world 'sales' many people will shudder. There is a strong likelihood that the word will conjure up an image of an untrustworthy second-hand car dealer, someone wanting to ‘screw’ you over in a win-lose arrangement.

As a result, people go into business fearful of the sale. And if you are not asking for the sale, then it is highly unlikely that you are ever going to get it.

As a business owner, you will be selling daily. Selling to your customers, investors, distributors.... selling your dream, your mission and your product is a core component of being in business, so it is vital that you reframe your mindset.

A sale is the exchange of something you have, for something that a person needs/wants. It is a win-win relationship.

As a founder, you set up your business to provide a product/service to deliver against a specific need that a specific customer has. This value exchange is your magic sauce and why you should be proud to shout about it from the rooftops.

Where people may feel icky again is the language that they use. Yes, you do need to be crystal clear about what you are selling and not shy away from showing your authority and credibility, but this can be done in a way that is authentic and unique to your brand. Brands like gym shark and Go-To skincare do this very well. Through ensuring that their communication exists in the overlap between the value exchange and the unique tone and POV as a brand the message feels authentic and more of a conversation than a hardcore sales pitch.

As you reframe your approach to sales here are 5 top things to keep at the top of your mind:

  1. Get clear on your specific target customer and the value that you bring to their lives.

  2. Join the dots. Make the reason to buy from you crystal clear in their mind.

  3. Ask for the sale but do so in an authentic way, that is unique to you.

  4. Make it easy for the customer to purchase.

  5. Dedicate time to actively think and plan your sales pipeline.
